 A New Phase


Hi. I'm Mary. For years now, I had been working with my husband as a Consultant on Education in Canada and overseas but sadly, he passed on so I am now in a new phase of my life. Education has been my life. It is time to move on and explore other paths.

So, I am on a journey into art. I have dabbled at art for so many years but always whining that there is no time to get absorbed. Now, that I have committed myself to do it, the whining stopped. Time is there even if it only meant an hour or so. Yes, I found that once I committed myself to it, I found the time and the energy and the place and whatever else I needed to make it happen. And it is happening for me.

So, in this blog, I'll take you to walk the path of art with me. I am not trained for it so this is quite an adventure but welcome and I hope you will enjoy this as much as I do.

You are now Framed! Mary Norton's Painting That was the message my friend sent me yesterday. She liked the first painting I did and, of course, that was something for me. I immediately mailed it to her. She had it framed. Now, it is sitting in her living room among her favourite objects. Who wouldn't be happy? The feeling of joy that you caused happiness and beauty in someone's life is very inspiring. We have so many capacities that when developed and shared can help many more. When you cook a dish for someone, it makes them happy. When you make people laugh, that is a gift that needs to be shared. You don't realize it but you are full of gifts. Some have been well developed. Others, not so.  It is not too late to develop whatever capacity you have because you know full well from experience that whatever it is you develop in yourself and shared with others, not only do you make them happy but you feel happy as well. I Overworked A Painting

I am learning new techniques and applying them to whatever I paint. Sometimes, the results are stunning but at other times, the colours get muddy and they are throwaways. Not necessarily. I can learn from these. Here's one painting that I overworked so much. How? Muddy Colours  First, I wanted the green leaves to take on the colour I envisioned it to be so I kept adding on top blue or brown to see how I can get just the right green. I should have done this when I mixed the paints the first time and not do it right on the paper after I have already painted the green leaves. But, honestly, I had no clue. After doing this on the leaves of the violets and on the petals, I killed all life int he painting. It became so lifeless even I realized I overdid it. I did it wrong. I did not know so back to learning. I went to the Library to borrow some books on watercolours. My Attempt at Fall Colours

Fall is such a fascinating time that I want to capture it. Not only that, one of my friends wondered what would be my take of Fall's changing colours. So, here is one attempt. Let the pictures speak to you. Still amateur but as Malcolm Gladwell said, you need to put in 10,000 hours for mastery. So I am putting in my hours. When you do something you enjoy, the hours pass you don't even notice it. It's just amazing.
